Gerhard Richter Painting, 2012 documentary by Corinna Belz

Inspired: Gerhard Richter Painting

I watched the Gerhard Richter Painting documentary over the holidays. The proverbial penny dropped regarding the inspiration for the background of our brand hang tag: Gerhard Richter.

When photographing our F1 M1980, Urban jacket last September on San Francisco’s Pier 70, we stumbled upon a wonderfully corroded set of metal doors. The doors were a compelling background for a shot, registering, I now imagine, on a subconscious Richter-scale.  While I sensed it at the time, the relationship only revealed itself as I watched the documentary.

As we developed our brand hang tag, there was a point at which we struggled to move beyond the safe, obvious choice: a white logo mark on a black background. In a moment of serendipity, we carved out a section of that Richteresque corroded door for the hang tag’s background from the image below. It just seemed to work, adding visual interest in both color and texture.  The hang tag appears to be eye catching as people frequently give it a second look when browsing through a selection of jackets at our pop-up events.
